To be eligible to apply for a multi-combination (class MC) licence, you must have held your heavy rigid (class HR) or heavy combination (class HC) licence for at least 1 year.
To upgrade to a class MC licence, you must:
- have held a class HR or HC licence for a minimum period of 1 year
- complete the driver licence application/renewal form (F3000)
- show your evidence of identity documents
- pass an eyesight test, if required
- declare that you are medically fit to drive the class of vehicle—if you have a medical condition that is likely to adversely affect your ability to drive or ride safely, you will be required to provide a medical certificate from your doctor stating that you are medically fit to drive or ride safely.
If you currently hold a class HR licence
If you currently hold a class HR licence, you must complete competency unit Drive Multi-combination Vehicle (TLIC4006) by completing a minimum of 16 hours of training and assessment, and present the statement of attainment to Transport and Main Roads.
If you currently hold a class HC licence
If you currently hold a class HC licence, you must either:
- complete competency unit Driver Multi-combination Vehicle (TLIC4006), complete a minimum of 8 hours of training and assessment, and present the statement of attainment to Transport and Main Roads
or
- complete the multi-combination driving experience declaration form (F3272) and provide evidence confirming your ability to drive a class MC vehicle and present these documents to Transport and Main Roads.
Prior to enrolling in the MC program, all drivers must complete a 3 hour driving lessons so our driver trainers can conduct a skills assessment.
On completion of this driving lesson you will be recommended for one of our courses based on your level of driving ability.
Pre-requisites
On-site training (Mount Isa)
• Must hold a current QLD Driver’s Licence.
• Must hold a Heavy Rigid (HR) or Heavy Combination (HC) Licence for at least 12 months.
• If you are found not yet competent, additional conditions and costs will apply (see below).

Conditions
• The MC course is a pass/fail course. A Statement of Attainment will only be issued once all requirements of TLIC4006 are successfully met.

Medical Fitness
• Students must be medically fit to undertake MC licence training.
• If you hold a medical condition (e.g., Diabetes), you must have consulted and received approval from both:
o Your treating medical professional, and
o The Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads

Minimum Training Requirements Per Person
• If you hold a HR licence → Minimum 16 hours of training & assessment (excluding breaks), across 2 or more days.
o Includes 4+ hours practical driving training.
o Includes 2-hour on-road Final Competency Assessment (FCA).
• If you hold a HC licence → Minimum 8 hours of training & assessment (excluding breaks).
o Includes 2+ hours practical driving training.
o Includes 2-hour on-road Final Competency Assessment (FCA).

Theory Assessment
• Closed-book test (no notes, no devices).
• Supervised by an authorised trainer.
• Must answer all questions and achieve at least 90% correct.
• If unsuccessful, you may repeat the same day under the same conditions.
Practical Training
• Delivered face-to-face with a qualified Driver Trainer.
• Involves:
o Driving in varied road and traffic conditions.
o Safe reversing activities.
o Coupling and uncoupling trailers.
• Correct use of gearbox for MC licence vehicles

Final Competency Assessment (FCA)
• Minimum 2 hours, face-to-face.
• Route approved by TMR in advance.
• Live video recorded in full, by demand of the regulator (TMR). Recordings are securely retained for 3 years and may be supplied to TMR on request.
• Assesses all elements of MC vehicle operation, including but not limited to:
o Pre-departure checks and safety inspections.
o Managing speed, space, and road positioning.
o Driving in a variety of traffic and road environments.
o Safe and controlled reversing.
o Coupling and uncoupling trailers.
o Correct use of transmission and gears.
o Compliance with road rules and fatigue management.
o Hazard perception and emergency response skills.
o Demonstrate a 70-metre straight-line reverse.
